Beard hair loss means bald patches or thin, patchy growth in your beard. The most common medical cause is alopecia barbae, an autoimmune condition that causes round, smooth patches.
Our doctor-led hair loss team in Birmingham finds the cause of your patchy beard and agrees on a clear treatment plan with you.

Beard hair loss is any loss of hair from the beard area, from a single bald patch to thin, uneven growth across the jaw and cheeks. Most often, this is alopecia barbae. This form of alopecia areata occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks your beard hair roots.
Round, smooth patches then appear, often within days or weeks. The good news is that the roots usually stay alive, so hair can grow back. However, not all patchy beards are alopecia barbae. Some men simply have patchy growth because of their genes.
Others lose beard hair because of a skin infection, low iron or a thyroid problem. That is why, at House of Health, we find the exact cause first, so you get the right treatment from the start.
It can look very different from one man to the next. Our team uses a close skin exam and magnified scans to find out exactly which type you have:
One or more round, smooth bald patches appear in the beard, often suddenly. This is the most common medical cause.
The beard has never grown in fully. Gaps along the cheeks or chin are linked to your genes, not a disease.
Infections, inflamed hair roots or skin conditions such as seborrhoeic dermatitis can cause hair to fall out in affected areas.
Scars from injury, burns or past skin problems can leave areas where hair no longer grows.

Many men first notice the patches while they shave or trim. Common signs include:
A patchy beard can have several causes, so a clear diagnosis matters. You may be more likely to develop it if you have:
In alopecia barbae, your immune system mistakenly attacks your beard hair roots.
Your genes affect both your risk of alopecia barbae and how fully your beard grows in.
Thyroid disease and vitiligo are linked to alopecia barbae, and low iron or vitamin D may add to hair loss.
Fungal infections, inflamed hair roots or seborrhoeic dermatitis in the beard can cause hair to fall out.
Our team determines whether your patches are alopecia barbae, a skin condition, or simply patchy growth. Here's how our hair loss team in Birmingham diagnoses it:
You will have a thorough 45- to 60-minute talk about when the patches started, your health, shaving and grooming habits, and family history.
A painless, magnified look at your beard shows the tell-tale signs of alopecia barbae, infection or inflamed hair roots.
We check your thyroid, iron and vitamin D levels, and look for linked autoimmune conditions.
If an infection is likely, a quick swab or skin scraping helps confirm the cause.
For alopecia barbae, the aim is to calm the immune reaction so hair can grow again. Depending on the size and number of patches, our doctors may prescribe topical treatments or injections into the patches. If a skin infection is the cause, they treat that directly. They always explain the benefits and possible side effects first.
Beard hair loss often goes hand in hand with other health issues. So we check and treat thyroid problems, low iron or low vitamin D found in your blood tests. For wider skin conditions, our dermatology team can help. At House of Health, it all sits under one roof.
Once we control the cause, we focus on helping your beard grow back as fully as possible. We track your progress at regular reviews.

Our doctor-led hair loss clinic in Birmingham finds the cause, treats it, and, if needed, offers restoration. This means you get diagnosis, treatment and transplant advice under one roof.

Often, yes. In alopecia barbae, the hair roots stay alive, so many patches regrow, either on their own or with treatment. However, new patches can appear later. Results vary from person to person.
Alopecia barbae is alopecia areata in the beard. Your immune system mistakenly attacks your beard hair roots, causing round, smooth bald patches.
Stress does not cause it on its own. However, stress may trigger a flare of alopecia barbae in men who are already prone to it.
It depends on the cause. Transplants suit stable, patchy growth best. If you have active alopecia barbae, we usually treat that first. We give honest, no-pressure advice on beard transplant options and whether they suit you.
No. You can book directly with our hair loss clinic in Birmingham, with no GP referral needed.
