PSC is a rare, long-term liver condition. Your immune system attacks the bile ducts inside and outside your liver.
Dr Abbas offers specialist care to manage your symptoms, check for complications, and protect your liver health.
Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) is a long-term liver disease. Your immune system mistakenly attacks the bile ducts (the tubes that carry bile out of your liver). This causes them to become inflamed and scarred.
Over time, these scars narrow and block the tubes. Bile gets trapped in the liver. This causes severe liver scars (cirrhosis) if left untreated.
PSC is closely linked to bowel issues, especially Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) like Ulcerative Colitis.

Mild inflammation in the bile ducts. Often, you might not feel sick at all. It is usually found in a routine blood test.
Scars begin to narrow the bile ducts. You might start to feel tired or notice an itch on your skin.
The bile ducts develop severe blockages (strictures). Trapped bile damages the liver. This causes significant scars.
Established liver cirrhosis. This requires close specialist care to prevent complications.
PSC progresses differently for everyone. Dr Nadir uses advanced tests to check your liver.
In the early stages, you might not have any symptoms. However, as the disease progresses, you may notice:
The exact cause of Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) is not completely clear. However, it is a mix of factors:
Your body’s natural defence system mistakenly attacks your healthy bile ducts. This causes redness and inflammation.
You may be more likely to develop PSC if someone in your family has it or if you carry certain genes.
Up to 80% of people with PSC also have Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), particularly Ulcerative Colitis.
Dr Nadir uses highly accurate, modern tests to confirm PSC and check your liver health. Here’s how our PSC specialist UK diagnoses:
You will have a 30-minute talk with Dr Nadir to map out your health history.
We check your liver function and look for special markers in your blood.
This is a highly detailed, painless MRI scan. It takes pictures of your bile ducts.
A quick, safe scan to measure liver scars exactly. We do not use needles.
Because PSC is so closely linked to IBD, Dr Nadir may recommend a check of your bowel.
Because PSC often overlaps with bowel conditions like Ulcerative Colitis, you need a doctor who understands both. As a PSC specialist in the UK, Dr Nadir looks after your entire digestive system. This means you get seamless, combined care for your liver and your gut under one roof.

There is no medical cure for PSC right now. However, we can manage the symptoms very effectively. Our goal is to keep your bile flow clear, prevent infections, and protect your liver from further damage.
Around 70% to 80% of people with PSC also have Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), usually Ulcerative Colitis. That is why it is crucial to see a specialist like Dr Abbas. He is an expert in both liver and gut health.
Not everyone does. We perform an ERCP only if the bile duct becomes too narrow and blocks bile flow. If needed, this procedure is highly effective for opening the duct and relieving symptoms such as jaundice.
A healthy, balanced diet is best. Because PSC can affect how you absorb fats, you might need extra fat-soluble vitamins. Dr Abbas and his team of dietitians will create a personalised plan for you.
No. While they sound similar and both affect the bile ducts, they are different. PBC usually affects the tiny ducts inside the liver. PSC affects both the inside and outside ducts.
