If you are struggling with chronic bloating, unpredictable bowel habits, or persistent abdominal pain, you do not have to just live with it. We provide elite-level, consultant-led investigations for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) in Birmingham. By combining advanced diagnostic breath testing with expert medical and dietetic care, we identify the root cause of your digestive distress and provide a precise eradication plan to restore your gut health.

At House of Health, we understand that functional gut disorders can severely disrupt your daily life, causing immense discomfort and anxiety. SIBO occurs when excessive bacteria build up in the small intestine, fermenting the food you eat and releasing gases that cause severe bloating and digestive issues.
Often misdiagnosed as standard Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), SIBO requires targeted medical testing. Our dedicated clinic in Birmingham offers immediate access to Consultant Gastroenterologists and Specialist Dietitians, allowing you to bypass long NHS waiting lists and get accurate answers straightaway.
Unhurried, in-depth assessments with a Consultant Gastroenterologist to thoroughly review your digestive symptoms, diet, and medical history.
We utilise highly accurate Hydrogen and Methane breath tests to precisely measure the gases produced by bacteria in your gut, identifying exactly which type of SIBO is causing your symptoms.
If SIBO is confirmed, our consultants provide bespoke, evidence-based treatment plans, often involving targeted antibiotics or other antimicrobial therapies to safely clear bacterial overgrowth.
Eradicating the bacteria is only the first step. Our Specialist Dietitian provides tailored nutritional support and gut rehabilitation plans to prevent SIBO from returning.

We do not just offer a quick chat; we provide in-depth clinical assessments to optimise your digestive longevity. Led by top private Gastroenterologists in Birmingham, we investigate the following concerns:
The hallmark symptom of SIBO. If you wake up with a flat stomach but look six months pregnant by the end of the day, bacterial fermentation in the small intestine is likely producing excess trapped gas.
A massive percentage of patients diagnosed with IBS actually have underlying SIBO. If your IBS symptoms have not responded to standard dietary changes, testing for bacterial overgrowth is a crucial next step.
Depending on the type of gas the bacteria produce, SIBO can cause chronic diarrhoea (often linked to hydrogen-dominant SIBO), severe constipation (often linked to methane-dominant SIBO), or an unpredictable mix of both.
Trapped gas and inflammation in the small bowel can cause severe, sharp or dull aching pain that significantly impacts your quality of life.
Patients with SIBO often find their bodies reacting poorly to carbohydrates, sugars, and high-FODMAP foods. This systemic inflammation can also lead to unexplained fatigue, brain fog, and malabsorption of vital nutrients (such as B12 and iron).
Our gastroenterology clinic relies on high-precision diagnostics to establish exactly what is happening inside your gut.
The gold-standard, non-invasive test for SIBO. After drinking a specific sugar solution, you will provide breath samples at regular intervals. We analyse these samples to detect the exact levels of hydrogen and methane gases produced by your gut bacteria.
Because SIBO can cause malabsorption, we may run detailed blood tests to check your iron, ferritin, B12, vitamin D, and inflammatory markers to ensure you are not suffering from secondary nutritional deficiencies.
If required, we offer comprehensive stool analysis to rule out other overlapping digestive conditions, such as H. Pylori infections, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), or pancreatic insufficiencies.
If you are booked in for a breath test, you must follow a strict preparatory diet (usually consisting of plain proteins and white rice) for 24 hours beforehand, followed by an overnight fast. This ensures the test is completely accurate. You will receive detailed, easy-to-follow instructions well in advance.
Your Consultant Gastroenterologist will take the time to truly understand your symptom timeline, dietary triggers, and previous medical treatments. We believe medical appointments should never feel rushed.
The SIBO breath test is entirely painless. You will drink a sweet liquid substrate (usually lactulose or glucose). Over the next 2 to 3 hours, you will simply blow into a collection tube every 15 to 20 minutes. This can often be done comfortably in our clinic, depending on your consultant’s recommendation.
If your results confirm SIBO, your consultant will arrange a bespoke eradication protocol. This usually involves a short, targeted course of specific antibiotics (which stay in the gut and are not absorbed systemically) to clear the overgrowth.
Eradication is only half the battle. To stop SIBO from relapsing, you will be referred to our Specialist Dietitian. They will help you navigate a tailored, phased diet (such as the Low-FODMAP diet) to heal your gut lining and safely reintroduce foods over time.
Detailed clinical assessment, symptom review, and personalised diagnostic plan with our Consultant Gastroenterologist.
Comprehensive, non-invasive breath test to detect and categorise bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine.
Review of test results, confirmation of diagnosis, and initiation of your medical eradication protocol.
Bespoke nutritional planning, gut-rehabilitation guidance, and dietary support to prevent SIBO relapse.
Note: Any required comprehensive blood panels, stool tests, or private prescriptions for targeted antibiotics are charged separately. Your doctor will explain these costs clearly during your visit to ensure total transparency.

SIBO stands for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. Your large intestine is supposed to have lots of bacteria, but your small intestine should have very little. SIBO occurs when bacteria migrate up into the small intestine and start fermenting your food prematurely, causing severe bloating, gas, and digestive pain.
Bacteria in your gut produce hydrogen and methane gases when they ferment food. Humans do not produce these gases naturally. By drinking a specific sugar solution and measuring the gases in your breath over a few hours, we can see exactly how much bacteria is present and where it is located.
Not at all. It is a completely painless, non-invasive test. It simply involves drinking a sweet liquid and blowing into a small collection tube at set time intervals.
We strongly advise against this. Different types of SIBO (hydrogen vs. methane dominant) require completely different types of targeted antibiotics or antimicrobials. Testing ensures we prescribe the exact right medication for your specific overgrowth, significantly increasing the success rate.
No. You can book an appointment directly with our Gastroenterology Clinic to investigate your bloating and digestive symptoms without needing an NHS GP referral.
For a significant number of patients, what has been labelled as IBS for years is actually undiagnosed SIBO. If your IBS is caused by SIBO, successfully eradicating the bacteria can lead to a dramatic, life-changing improvement in your symptoms.
