“You deserve the best cardiology care, regardless of your background or circumstances.”

“When you sit across from me, you are treated as I would want one of my own family to be treated.”
Your heart health is personal to Dr Maher. With over 25 years working in the NHS — more than 12 as a Consultant — you benefit from the depth of experience that comes from thousands of clinical encounters, complex device implantations, and advanced imaging studies.
Whether your case is straightforward or highly complex, you receive the same quality of thinking: rigorous, compassionate, and built around you as an individual.

You have access to expertise in the full spectrum of cardiac implantable electronic devices — pacemakers, defibrillators, and cardiac resynchronisation therapy. These can transform your quality of life, alleviating blackouts, breathlessness, and life-threatening rhythm disorders. Dr Maher leads this service and has introduced innovations across multiple trusts.
You benefit from one of the most comprehensive cardiac imaging skill sets available. From standard echocardiography to transoesophageal and stress echocardiography, Cardiac CT (Level 2 accredited), and the gold standard of Cardiac MRI — your diagnosis is built on the clearest possible picture of your heart.
Your treatment is informed by the latest research — including studies Dr Maher has led as Principal Investigator. You are cared for by a clinician who not only follows the evidence, but actively shapes it through active participation in landmark national and international cardiology trials.
You deserve a diagnosis built on the fullest possible evidence. Dr Maher holds accreditations across every major cardiac imaging modality, ensuring your case is assessed with precision and depth.
You receive the benefits of the most powerful cardiac imaging tool available. Dr Maher has overseen the development of CMRI services across multiple NHS Trusts and has established services internationally. Thousands of reported studies mean that when your CMRI result arrives, it is interpreted by someone who has seen it all.
Accredited by the British Society of Echocardiography in both transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography, your echocardiogram is performed and interpreted to the highest national standard. Stress echocardiography — both exercise and pharmacological — is also available to you.
Holding Level 2 accreditation in Cardiac CT, you benefit from a consultant able to integrate cross-sectional imaging seamlessly into your overall assessment, ensuring nothing is missed in your cardiac work-up.
The expertise you access has shaped cardiac imaging services far beyond Birmingham. Dr Maher has trained NHS consultant colleagues and international fellows from Sri Lanka who have gone on to establish new CMRI services in their home countries.
When you are treated by Dr Maher, you benefit from a career built on curiosity and scientific rigour — from a PhD published in high-impact journals to active leadership of current national and international clinical trials.
You benefit from foundational scientific thinking forged during three dedicated years of patient-based research into the role of inorganic nitrite as a store of transported nitric oxide in health and heart failure — results published in high-impact journals.
As Principal Investigator, Dr Maher addressed how to manage device-detected short episodes of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. The trial, which was halted early due to lack of benefit from anticoagulation, directly informs how patients like you are managed today.
You stand to benefit from this ongoing trial examining pacing-induced cardiomyopathy and whether physiological pacing from the outset prevents its development — directly relevant to how your pacemaker is programmed and followed up.
This trial investigates the benefit of primary prevention defibrillator implantation in patients with non-ischaemic cardiomyopathy and visible fibrosis on cardiac MRI. If this applies to you, the evidence generated here could directly shape your treatment options.
Every ward round, every catheter lab procedure is an educational encounter. You benefit from a culture where the team around you is continually learning — from doctors at every grade to cardiac nurses and physiologists whose input shapes your care.
Dr Maher runs weekly teaching sessions for resident doctors, centred on real cases and literature review. The doctors who look after you on the wards are part of a learning environment designed to produce excellent clinicians.
Previously affiliated with Warwick University Medical School and responsible for the senior medical block curriculum, Dr Maher has shaped the education of the next generation of doctors — including those who may one day look after you.
Accredited as a teacher of Advanced Life Support, Dr Maher ensures that the teams working around you are trained to respond to the most critical cardiac emergencies — giving you confidence in the safety of your care environment.
Dr Maher qualified from Birmingham University Medical School, the same city where he now serves patients. Alongside the MBChB, he completed an Intercalated Bachelor of Medical Science, gaining his first experience of scientific research.
Studying the effect of volume loading on streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats under Professor Edward Johns — his first experience presenting at a scientific meeting.
Three years of dedicated patient-based research into nitric oxide and heart failure, culminating in findings published in high-impact peer-reviewed journals. This academic depth underpins every complex clinical decision made on your behalf.
Currently serving as Consultant Cardiologist and Inpatient Care Lead. Dr Maher leads the cardiac device service and continues to develop cardiac imaging provision for patients across the West Midlands.
