Male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) is the most common type of hair loss in men. It can show up as a receding hairline, a thinning crown, or both.
Our doctor-led hair loss team in Birmingham assesses how far your hair loss has progressed and builds a clear plan to protect the hair you have.
Male pattern baldness is hair loss caused by your genes and a hormone called DHT (dihydrotestosterone). In men who inherit sensitive hair roots, DHT makes those roots shrink over time.
Each new hair then grows back thinner, shorter and weaker, until some roots stop producing visible hair altogether. This usually starts at the temples and the crown. It can start as early as your late teens and becomes more common as you get older. It is not harmful to your health, but it can hit your confidence hard.
That is why early care matters: roots that are still alive respond far better to treatment than roots that have been dormant for years.

This type of hair loss tends to progress slowly. Doctors grade it with the Norwood scale. Our team uses a close scalp exam and AI scalp maps to see exactly what stage you are at:
The hairline moves back a little at the temples. Many men barely notice it at this stage.
The temples recede further into a clear M shape. Some men also see the crown start to thin.
A thin or bald spot forms on the crown, while the front hairline continues to move back.
The front and crown areas join up. Hair remains mainly around the sides and back of the head.
Thinning creeps up over months and years, so it is easy to miss at first. However, as more roots shrink, common signs include:

Unlike sudden hair loss after stress or illness, this type of hair loss is driven by genes and hormones. You may be more likely to develop it if you have:
DHT, a hormone made from testosterone, shrinks hair roots that are sensitive to it.
Your genes, from either side of your family, decide how sensitive your hair roots are.
The chance of visible hair loss rises with each decade, though it can start in your teens.
Low iron, low vitamin D, thyroid problems, stress and some medicines or hormone supplements can make thinning worse.
Our team confirms the cause of your hair loss before starting any treatment. Here's how our hair loss team in Birmingham diagnoses it:
You will have a thorough 45- to 60-minute talk about your hair, family history, health, medicines and lifestyle.
A painless, magnified scan with AI scalp analysis maps your hair density and shows how many roots have shrunk.
We check your iron, vitamin D, thyroid and hormone levels to rule out other causes of thinning.
If it helps, a simple TrichoTest DNA swab shows which treatments your body is likely to respond to.
The first step in treating male pattern baldness is to target DHT and support hair roots. After your assessment, our doctors may prescribe tablets that reduce DHT's effects, a treatment you apply to the scalp, or both. They explain the benefits and possible side effects first, so you can choose with confidence. Your TrichoTest results can help us pick the option most likely to suit you.
For many men, in-clinic treatments complement medical care. PRP treatment uses growth factors from your own blood to support weak hair roots, and polynucleotide injections aim to improve scalp health. Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is a gentle light treatment that aims to boost blood flow to the scalp. At House of Health, we combine these with medical treatment, depending on your plan.
Androgenetic alopecia is a long-term condition, so it needs a long-term plan. Our main goal is to keep the hair you have and help thin areas grow thicker.
Progress Tracking: Repeat AI scalp maps show exactly how your hair responds over time.
Lifestyle and Nutrition: We correct low iron, vitamin D or other gaps found in your blood tests.
Hair Transplant Advice: If surgery could suit you, we give honest, no-pressure advice on your hair transplant options.

Not all thinning in men is male pattern baldness. Low iron, thyroid problems or stress can look the same or make it worse, so you need a team that checks the full picture. Our doctor-led hair loss clinic in Birmingham confirms the cause first, then treats it. This means you get tests, prescriptions and in-clinic treatment under one roof.

Yes. There is no permanent fix, but treatment can slow it down and, for many men, help thin hair grow thicker. Many men notice less shedding within a few months, with any regrowth taking 6 to 12 months. Results vary.
As early as you can. Hair roots that have only just started to shrink respond best. Once a root has been dormant for years, it is much harder to revive.
It is a long-term condition. Most medical treatments only work while you keep using them, so stopping often means the hair loss returns. Your doctor will work with you to plan the right long-term approach.
It depends on your stage, your donor hair and whether your hair loss is stable. We give you honest, no-pressure advice on hair transplant options if surgery could suit you.
